Two bits, Four bits, Six bits, a dollar……… Eleven thousand dollars? Never underestimate the power of people who care
Knowing of the Franciscans International declaration of the YEAR OF WATER and being a Franciscan sponsored organization, the associates of the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago Service Corporation and its affiliates desired to undertake a campaign whereby THEY would make a difference in this world.Over the past several years, we have reminded ourselves of the precious gift of SISTER WATER.We have looked at ways to conserve, increase healthy usage and just appreciate this wonderful gift.We have also increased our awareness of how some of our brothers and sisters lack this gift.
Despite the challenges facing our associates in this economy, whenever there has been a catastrophe, our associates have risen to the occasion and given most generously to help others in need.
Recognizing the dignity of giving and the limited means available, we began our 2 bit (quarter) campaign. Our goal was to raise $5,000 for a water catchment system for a school in Rawanda. We calculated that if each associate donated $0.25 each month from April through October, we would be close to the $5,000 and that the difference would be made up by those who could be more generous.
Using the Pastoral Care and Mission Integration staffs at each location, we told the story.Pictures of ‘drinking water’ at the school where left in breakrooms with a coin collection container nearby. The residents in the Communities became aware of this campaign and eagerly joined the associates in raising money for the water system. When the totals were calculated last November, we were amazed!
Together, Franciscan Communities and its affiliates raised over $11,000—more than doubling our goal.Working with “Water for Life”, we are able to provide a catchment tank and all of the supplies needed to offer clean drinking water for the children at one Rawandan school.
Together with St Francis, we proclaim:
‘Most high, all powerful, all good Lord! All praise is yours, all glory, all honor, and all blessing. To you, alone, Most High, do they belong. No mortal lips are worthy to pronounce your name…
Be praised, My Lord, through Sister Water; she is very useful, and humble, and precious, and pure….’
Be praised My Lord, by these associates, who share with their brothers and sisters….
‘Praise and bless my Lord, and give thanks, and serve him with great humility.’
